Peter Gumbsch is head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of
Materials (IWM), with locations in Freiburg and Halle/Saale, Germany. He is
a full
professor in Mechanics of Materials and head of the Institute for
Reliability of Systems and Devices (IZBS) at the University of Karlsruhe
(TH).
Before that he was head of the Research Group Modelling and Simulation of
Thin Film
Phenomena at the Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung in Stuttgart,
Germany. His research interests include Materials Modelling, Mechanics and
Physics of Material, Defects in Solids, Failure of Materials.
Professor Gumbsch is a member of the scientific and technical council (WTR) of the Fraunhofer society, and a member of the board of directors of the Fraunhofer group Materials and Devices (VWB). He is also a member of Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (DGM), the Materials Research Society (MRS), and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP/UK). He has won the Masing Memorial Prize, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (DGM), and the Peter Haasen Prize, Institut für Metallphysik, Universität Göttingen. In 2007, he won the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz award of the German Research Foundation (DFG), the highest German research prize. | |
